A New Round for the AR15 Platform

Jake Nigon won our topics contest a while back with a request for an article on the .224 Valkyrie. Well, Jake, here is what I know so far about this new round.

.224 Valkyrie

The 224 Valkyrie is a new round from Federal. It has a 90 grain 6.8 bullet necked down to a .224. The new round will be stable to 1000 yards. Industry insiders say that it beats out the .22 Nosler, 6.5 Grendel, and 5.56 round characteristics while at the same time, approaching 6.5 Creedmore performance on a AR15 platform. The .224 Valkyrie supposedly provides the energy retention of the 6.5 Grendel, the comparable drop and drift of the 6.5 Creedmoor at 1000 yards,  and the up close power of the .22 Nosler. Federal says the Valkyrie will finally offer practical 1,000-yard performance in an AR thanks to the heavier bullets and extremely high ballistic coefficients of the new cartridge. There is talk about consistency out to 1300 yards.

AR15 Platform

Since its a necked down 6.8 cartridge, it will fit in an AR15 platform. You have to use a 6.8 BCG, 6.8 magazines, and a .224 barrel, all of which are currently available. Several manufacturers are jumped on the bandwagon early and are starting to produce rifles. Some of the manufacturers that are producing or plan to produce a rifle are SavageJP EnterprisesMasterpiece ArmsSeekinsLWRCILaRueLMT Defense, Q LLC, MossbergBarrett and CMMG, just to name a few.

What Does the Future Hold

I’m not sure what the future holds for this round yet. If promises turn to reality, this may just be a game changer for the AR15 platform. If the .224 Valkyrie is truly nipping at the 6.5 Creedmoor’s heels in terms of performance, then it may just be what the doctor ordered for an AR15 platform. Look at what the 6.5 Creedmoor has done in just the six or so years it’s been around. Could the .224 Valkyrie do the same? We will have to wait and see. Let me know what you think below.
